MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Program Objective

     To prepare the student for an entry level career as a medical assistant. Students will acquire specialized skills in areas of medical terminology, medical insurance and coding, communicable diseases, pharmacology, and clinical medical assisting. Students will develop strong microcomputer sills and will have the opportunity to complete a realistic externship experience with a local employer prior to graduation.

Competency Profile

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, the graduate should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of terminology procedures and proper ethics acceptable in the allied health field.

  • Assist in the preparation of patients for exams, assist with minor office surgery, draw blood, administer injections and medications and maintain proper medical charts.

  • Utilize computerized keyboarding and word processing programs to effectively complete forms and correspondence.

  • Conform to professional standards and demonstrate a professional attitude toward the clinical medical assistant field.

  • Describe the appropriate equipment that is necessary to successfully work as a clinical medical assistant.

  • Demonstrate appropriate human relations skills in working cooperatively with fellow employees, patients and medical practitioners.

  • Develop effective verbal and written communication skills to successfully relate to patient needs and confidentiality issues.

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant Program, the graduate has the option to take The American Medical Technologies (AMT) National Certification Test to become a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
