MCCANN MEETS THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY

McCann School of Business and Technology is, by one definition, a classic. It has withstood the test of time. For the past 107 years, McCann has provided career training for immediate marketability of its students throughout the communities that it serves. Meeting those needs has been the key to its longevity.

Starting in 1897 in a small building in the sleepy coal town of Mahanoy City, McCann offered training in accountancy and secretarial science to fill positions in and around Schuylkill County. Although new programs and majors were added, for decades, the school graduated area residents who filled those positions for the local employers.

In 1995, seeing the need for qualified professionals “south of the mountain,” McCann expanded. The doors to a brand new facility opened on Woodglen Road in Pottsville. Today, almost ten years later, the Pottsville campus fills the need for local employers who demand quality-trained professionals in business, technology, and allied health fields.

The expansion continued as the school known throughout Schuylkill County opened its doors to a new facility in Sunbury, Northumberland County. Since that September of 1998, hundreds of residents from the Greater Susquehanna Valley have taken advantage of the opportunities provided by McCann School of Business and Technology. After a short six years, McCann has relocated its present operation to a larger facility in Sunbury to accommodate its growth.

Once again, McCann proved to fulfill its mission of providing quality education as its graduates assumed positions in the local communities.

However, the growth and expansion continued.

In April of 2003, McCann opened its latest campus in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania. Across the street from the Steamtown Mall in the brand new Scranton Enterprise Center, students from the entire Wyoming Valley attend classes in a modern, state-of-the-art facility. While the students at this new campus are working toward graduation, the enrollment has continued to climb. McCann-Scranton will soon be graduating well-trained professionals to fill the needs of employers in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

In August of 2002, McCann School of Business and Technology became a part of Delta Education Systems, a corporate entity based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Delta owns and operates 12 schools in Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Ohio, and the four campuses of McCann in Pennsylvania.

This positions McCann among a growing number of career schools modeled after the best practices in the nation. It also provides a greater amount of resources and support for all of the career training programs offered at McCann.

The physical expansion is only one aspect that reflects McCann’s popularity. It has also expanded its curriculum to keep pace with the latest developments in technology as well as the need for qualified workers in new fields of employment.

McCann is proud to announce that it has added the following programs to its curriculum, Surgical Technology, Massage Therapy, and Criminal Justice.

With a nation-wide shortage of nurses, hospitals need to use their resources efficiently. The surgical technologist is a highly trained member of the operating room team. Assisting in all types of surgeries, the surgical tech fills many responsibilities from preoperative, perioperative, and post-operative care of the surgical patient.

As the medical society recognizes the benefits of alternative healing treatments, massage therapy is making its way into mainstream health care. Once a specialty offered only at resorts, spas, and beauty salons, massage therapy is now practiced as a part of treatments provided in a holistic approach to health care. Certified massage therapists work with chiropractors, physical therapists, and other health professionals, contributing to the well-being of their patients as the relieve the tensions of daily living.

Until the fateful September 11, the term, “homeland security”, was not in our vocabulary. Today, security is a priority issue across-the-board and a source of additional employment opportunities for the trained professional.

The recent erection of State Corrections Institutions, throughout our area, while perhaps a sad commentary on the current state of society, is a boom for those interested in working in corrections.

Because of societal and global changes such as these, the need for trained criminal justice personnel are in high demand in a variety of agencies. Some of these agencies include federal, state, and local corrections institutions and emergency management centers, police departments, public and private sector security settings for industrial, commercial, residential, and governmental organizations, and adjudicated youth centers.

Addressing that concern, McCann added a criminal justice program to its curriculum. This broad scope major addresses security, policing, and corrections.

These new programs are another part of McCann’s expansion and growth.
Growth and expansion only come by filling the needs of the communities served by the school. Helping area residents achieve their educational goals for marketability and employment has been the mission of McCann for the past 107 years. It will not change. It is classic.
